Spain Signals Discussing Israel’s Role in Sports Events
(MENAFN) Spain’s education minister and official government spokesperson, Pilar Alegría, conveyed on Tuesday that the nation is “open” to engaging in dialogue concerning Israel’s inclusion in international sporting events.
This stance highlights Spain's readiness to participate in global conversations on this issue.
Speaking before the Council of Ministers, Alegría stated that “Spain, along with the rest of the partners and EU countries, will also be willing to participate in this debate under the same premise that these double standards do not exist.”
She pointed to the precedent of Russia’s exclusion from sports competitions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining fairness and uniform standards in international decisions.
Nonetheless, she clarified that the decision to exclude Russia was made not by individual countries, but by the International Olympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee, and various International Sports Federations.
This underscores that such determinations are primarily the responsibility of global sporting authorities.
Alegría further explained that if discussions about Israel’s involvement in sports competitions advance, “first of all, it is up to the respective international committees and the international federations” to handle the matter, reinforcing the role of global organizations in overseeing such issues.
Her remarks followed comments by Premier Pedro Sánchez, who on Monday called for Israel’s removal from the Eurovision Song Contest and other global events.
Sánchez drew a comparison to the international response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, advocating for a consistent defense of human rights and adherence to international norms.
