Germany Criticizes Israeli Gunfire Near Diplomats

(MENAFN) Germany has issued a forceful rebuke against Israel following an incident in which a convoy of international diplomats came under gunfire while visiting the Jenin refugee camp, located in the West Bank.

The episode, which took place on Wednesday, has drawn strong reactions from German officials, who have labeled the shooting as unjustified and deeply troubling.

A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry declared, “The German Foreign Ministry strongly condemns this unprovoked firing,” and confirmed that a German envoy was among the delegation present during the visit.

She further stressed the significance of the diplomatic mission's presence, stating, “The independent observer role of the diplomats on the ground is indispensable and in no way represents a threat to Israeli security interests.”

The spokeswoman demanded a swift explanation from Israeli authorities, emphasizing, “The Israeli government must immediately clarify the circumstances and respect the inviolability of diplomats.”

As outlined by the ministry, the international delegation’s trip had been prearranged with both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli military, suggesting there was official acknowledgment of their presence.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is expected to address the matter directly with his Israeli counterpart in an upcoming telephone discussion, although no specifics have been released regarding the timing or content of that conversation.

A Palestinian official, speaking to a news agency, stated that Israeli troops discharged warning shots at the group as it neared the entrance to the Jenin refugee camp, located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The delegation was composed of representatives from a wide range of nations, including EU member countries, Türkiye, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, India, Brazil, and Japan.

According to a Palestinian news agency, several additional nations were also represented in the diplomatic group.
