Israeli forces fire ‘warning shots’ near foreign diplomats

(MENAFN) Israeli forces fired warning shots near a group of foreign diplomats touring the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, triggering panic among the delegation and accompanying journalists. Video footage captured the chaotic scene as representatives from over 20 countries scrambled for cover. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The visit, organized by the Palestinian Authority, included delegates from countries such as the UK, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, China, Japan, Mexico, and Egypt. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the group had strayed from their approved route and entered what the military described as an “active combat zone.” The IDF said warning shots were fired to prompt the group to retreat and expressed regret for the disruption.

In response, the Palestinian Authority accused Israel of violating international law, stating the diplomats were on a legitimate mission to assess humanitarian conditions. The incident occurred amid increasing international scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

Global reaction was swift and critical. France and Italy summoned Israeli ambassadors, while Canadian officials demanded a full investigation. Ireland’s deputy prime minister called the situation “completely unacceptable,” and the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for accountability. Egypt denounced the act as a breach of diplomatic norms, and Türkiye strongly condemned the incident involving its representatives.

This event follows Israel’s ongoing military operation in the West Bank, launched in January and dubbed “Iron Wall,” which has seen Israeli forces seize control of Jenin and fortify entrances to the refugee camp. Israeli leaders say the campaign aims to eliminate terrorism, with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant declaring that the Jenin camp will undergo lasting change.
