Israeli Court Extends Arrest of Gaza Doctor Without Charges
Hussam Abu Safiya, a pediatric consultant and head of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was detained on December 27, 2024, after Israeli forces raided the medical facility in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. The hospital was reportedly rendered non-operational during the operation, and he was taken into custody at gunpoint.
According to a statement by Physicians for Human Rights Israel, the Beersheba District Court approved the continuation of Abu Safiya’s detention under the “Unlawful Combatants Law,” without bringing charges against him and rejected a request by his defense team for his release.
The law allows Israeli authorities to detain individuals from Gaza for extended periods without trial.
The group said the court had previously extended his detention for six months in October 2025, but that the latest ruling was described as effectively indefinite.
The organization also said the court rejected arguments that holding a physician while he was performing medical duties amounts to unlawful detention.
It further warned that Abu Safiya is currently being held in Negev Prison under what it described as harsh conditions, including lack of access to medication and medical treatment, while his health reportedly continues to deteriorate.
